Holiday Season Non-Negotiables

The holiday season is finally upon us and I don't know about all of you but I truly enjoy this time of the year (except for the weather). Between the family time, holiday parties, baking, and holiday movie watching, life can feel pretty wild instead of being the recharge that we need. Here are some simple strategies to help tame the wildness of the holiday season and keep you on track with your progress:

  1. Stay hydrated. Winter in Nebraska means a couple things: cold, snow and very dry air and because water constitutes 50-70% of total body mass, the more the merrier this time of year! Water helps our bodies run more efficiently and when we don't get enough, progress can start to stall.

  2. Prioritize protein. The holiday season is known for rich, indulgent foods and I'm just as guilty as the next person for wanting another Oreo ball...or ten. Instead of focusing on what you shouldn't eat, focus on the quality of the foods you're eating. If you prioritize protein and eat that first at your holiday meals, you will be less likely to overeat.

  3. Movement. Any movement that you can get in each day will make a huge difference. With all of the holiday activities, it can be difficult to find time to get into the gym. If that's the case, park towards the back of the parking lot at your office or take the stairs instead of the elevator. No matter how small the movement, it all matters!

  4. Rest. The holidays are a great time to rest and recharge. Even though the season is wild, mindful rest will help you recharge and refocus your energy for the new year ahead.

These strategies and staying consistent during the holiday season will have its reward when you don't have to be like the other maniacs on January 1st trying to start their health and wellness journey! It's never too late to start your health and wellness journey and I'm ready to help you with that!
